Nearly 1,000 people filled the Dulce Nombre de Maria Cathedral-Basilica in Hagatña as Archbishop Ryan P. Jimenez and priests of the Archdiocese of Agaña celebrated Mass with six visiting bishops and two priests from Oceania Tuesday, May 19, 2026.
The visiting bishops and priests traveled here from Australia, New Zealand, Fiji, Papua New Guinea, the Solomon Islands and Thailand for the Executive Committee Meeting of the Federation of Catholic Bishops’ Conferences of Oceania (FCBCO) hosted by the Archdiocese of Agaña from May 18-20, 2026.
Hymns and prayers were presented in multiple languages reflecting the diversity yet commonality of our Pacific people. The Eucharistic celebration was described as a “Mass for the Evangelization of Peoples” during the Seventh Week of Easter.
Deacon Romy Hernandez proclaimed the Gospel in CHamoru.

Students of Guam’s Catholic Schools had important roles during the May 19, 2026 Mass for the Evangelization of Peoples celebrated by Archbishop Ryan with six concelebrating bishops from Oceania and 18 priests. Archbishop Peter Loy Chong, Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Suva, Fiji delivered the homily and described the beautiful local CHamoru concept of inafa’maolek which he learned about during his visit here.
“I was informed that it means to have right relationships,” Archbishop Peter said. “To restore harmony, caring for one another. That relationship is the prime value that we have and to seek always, the common good.”
He tied inafa’maolek to our Christian faith. “Beautiful word,” Archbishop Peter said. “And if this word was really explained it could bring together the heart and the core of Christianity.”
The visiting archbishop who has visited Guam once before, went on to speak about globalization and the threat of harm that it often brings to the common good of the people of the Pacific people.
