Three Collections for Pontifical Mission Societies

1. WORLD MISSION SUNDAY

Always on the second last Sunday of OCTOBER. This collection is made during the Eucharistic Celebration and it is meant to be given entirely to the Pontifical Society of the Propagation of the Faith. This one and only collection on World Mission Sunday, shows the communion and solidarity of our Church with the poorest Churches, This collection belongs to the 1,250 poorest dioceses that depend on the Pontifical Missionary Society of the Propagation of the Faith for their life and work.

2. HOLY CHILDHOOD

Collection is for the benefit of children up to the age of 14 years. Holy Childhood Collection also known as ‘Children Helping Children’. There is no special day set for this collection. It is up to the diocese to decide when and how this collection can be made. For example: some dioceses take up the Lenten Collection for Holy Childhood, but some have their own special day such as Epiphany, Holy Innocents, St Theresa of Lucieux or any other Feast that is significant for Children Helping Children.

3. ST PETER THE APOSTLE

Collection supports seminaries and first year novices of Religious Congregations.

Therefore, this Society is particularly concerned with one of the most urgent necessities for the progress of evagelization, the construction and maintenance of Seminaries in Mission Lands. Again, this Special Collection is up to each diocese again to decide when and how it can be done.

MESSAGE FOR 2025 WORLD MISSION SUNDAY

Pope Francis’ message for World Mission Sunday 2025 emphasizes that Christians are called to be “Missionaries of Hope Among All Peoples,” a fundamental vocation to spread and build hope in the footsteps of Christ, especially in times of difficulty and isolation. The message centred on the theme of hope for the Jubilee Year, encourages prayer, compassion, and service as key ways for individuals and the entire Church to share God’s love and live out their missionary identity by becoming messengers of hope and comfort to others.

As “Missionaries of Hope”, the Pope is calling the entire Church to be messengers and builders of hope by living, sharing, and transmitting hope to all people, especially in the Jubilee Year of 2025. Key themes include the importance of prayer as a primary missionary activity, acting with joy and compassion, and the call for all to participate in spreading God’s love through active faith, service to the poor, and spreading the Gospel.

These two paragraphs are again reminding us of our calling as baptised Christians at the same time challenging us with our lives as missionaries of hope to all.

Our vocation or our calling is for the Mission of the Church. The poor, the less fortunate, sufferings, the victims of wars and victims of other social problems are all crying out. Do we respond to their needs? Are we signs of hope to them? These are questions to reflect on, as we are all called to be MISSIONARIES OF HOPE TO ALL.

Some Key Messages to Help Us as We Prepare for World Mission Sunday

Key Messages:

Theme of Hope:

The core message is that Christians are “Missionaries of Hope,” reminding everyone of their vocation to share hope in the world.

Jubilee Year Context:

This message is particularly relevant for the Jubilee Year 2025, which itself has a central theme of hope.

Fundamental Vocation:

The message stresses that being a messenger and builder of hope is a fundamental vocation for all Christians.

Following Christ:

The Pope encourages Christians to follow the footsteps of Christ, who was a messenger and builder of hope for those in need.

Importance of Prayer:

Prayer is highlighted as essential for keeping the spark of hope alive and transforming it into a great fire that illuminates and warms others.

Active Witnessing:

Christians are urged to be active in their faith, supporting others and working for a compassionate world through their actions, service, and spreading of the Good News.

Cultivating Closeness:

The message calls for cultivating closeness, compassion, and tenderness, in contrast to the isolation and self-centeredness that can make people incapable of altruism.

Universal Mission:

The mission of bringing hope extends to every place and circumstance, and it is for all Christians, not just missionaries in foreign lands.

Mary as Guide:

The mission is entrusted to Mary, the Mother of Hope, who is asked to guide Christians in bringing God’s love to the world.
